What is a picture frame?
A picture frame is a wood or metal border that holds, protects, and displays flat art like photos, prints, and documents. A complete frame has four parts. The moulding is the border you see. The glazing is the clear sheet in front (ours is UV resistant acrylic). The backing supports the art from behind. The hardware lets it hang on the wall.
Good frames protect as much as they decorate. Acid free backing keeps paper from yellowing. UV acrylic slows sun fade. A tight v-nailed corner keeps the whole thing square for decades. Browse our solid wood picture frames to see the build up close.
What is a shadow box?
A shadow box is a deep picture frame with space between the glazing and the backing. Standard frames hold flat art. Shadow boxes hold objects. The extra depth makes room for medals, dried bouquets, baby shoes, and folded flags.
Items are usually pinned or stitched to the backing so they stay put. Keepsakes are one of a kind, so the materials matter here more than anywhere. Acid free backing and UV acrylic keep fabric and paper from breaking down. See our shadow boxes for made-to-order sizes.
What is a picture frame mat?
A mat is a paper board border that sits inside the frame, between the art and the glazing. It has a window cut in the middle where your art shows through. Mats do two jobs. They give art breathing room, so it stands out. And they keep the art off the acrylic, which protects it over time.
Mat sizes list the outside size plus the window size. An 11x14 mat with an 8x10 window fits an 11x14 frame and shows an 8x10 photo. Shop our precut mats in white and soft colors.
Acrylic or glass?
Acrylic is the better choice for most framing. It is just as clear as glass, about half the weight, and it does not shatter. That last part matters in shipping and in homes with kids. Frame grade acrylic also blocks UV light, which slows fading. Glass scratches less, but a soft cloth and gentle cleaner keep acrylic clear for years. We use UV resistant frame grade acrylic in every frame we build.
What size frame do I need?
Match the frame size to your art size. The size you order equals the frame's opening. Measure the art's exact width and height, then order that size. Using a mat? Order the frame to match the mat's outside size instead.
